Don’t Let the Senate Gut the ABLE Act

Last Wednesday, the ABLE Act passed the House with a vote of 404-17. The Senate is expected to take action this week, and it is likely the bill will pass; however, the National Center for Independent Living (NCIL) has concerns regarding the bill.

Recent changes to the bill have made it so that only individuals who acquire a disability before the age of 26 are eligible for an ABLE account. Individuals who acquired a disability at or after the age of 26 will be unable to have an ABLE account. The ABLE Act is important for all people with disabilities, regardless of when they acquired a disability.

Asset accumulation is important for everyone with a disability. Age is not a factor. Everyone should be able to improve their economic status and earn their way out of poverty.

Let the Senators of North Dakota know how important it is to make this bill open to all those with a disability. Make your voice heard by contacting your Senators.
